Nordic semiconductor offer a broad selction of solutions for 2.4GHz proprietary development. The nRF52 and nRF51 Series SoCs offer flexible multiprotocol capability in addition to 2.4GHz proprietary and can be used for dual mode designs together with Bluetooth, ANT and Thread/802.15.4 technologies.

Whilst 2.4GHz proprietary development does not offer the interoperability that comes with standards like Bluetooth, it can offer special abilities to tailor both ends of a communication link for maximum efficiencies in terms of low latency and energy consumption when smartphone connectivity and interoperability are not a system requirement. The nRF52 and nRF51 Series being multiprotocol offer the maximum in terms of flexibility and benefits and offer the possibility of dual mode operation where necessary and desirable.

Scaling for the future

The nRF Connect SDK is a unified, open source SDK for development across the range of Nordic Semiconductor devices. It incorporates open source software from the community, and open source software developed and test by Nordic Semiconductor. This SDK is based on use of a real-time operating system (RTOS), the Zephyr RTOS. Zephyr is designed specifically for highly scalable, energy-conscious applications using constrained devices and SoCs. The use of an RTOS brings many benefits in terms of predictability, safety and offers scope for easy code re-use across Nordic Semiconductor's short-range and cellular IoT products. The nRF Connect SDK is maturing steadily and represents the future development of Nordic software deliveries.

Bluetooth Low Energy support

The nRF Connect SDK has considerable Bluetooth Low Energy support up to and including Bluetooth 5, though currently not as extensive as Nordic SoftDevices and nRF5 SDK. There is a Bluetooth Low Energy Link Layer (LL) and a Host layer offering multiple concurrent links.

Bluetooth mesh also has support for beginning evaluation of this technology using the examples provided.

Bluetooth Low Energy support is a continual process with nRF Connect SDK using a 'develop in the open' approach. Tagged releases are tested and stable. 

nRF Connect SDK is recommended for evaluation and early development work. For critical path projects Nordic recommends it's mature SoftDevices and nRF5 SDK. 

LTE-M and NB-IoT support


The nRF9160 SiP for LTE-M and NB-IoT is supported in its entirety by the nRF Connect SDK. The nRF Connect SDK offers full stack support for LTE-M, NB-IoT and assisted GPS, additionally there is a generous selection of drivers, modules and application examples to build a  broad range of applications for the cellular IoT market. the integrated Zephyr RTOS simplifies application development and enables secure, reliable and predictable behaviour in your applications. The unified nature of the nRF Connect SDK also means great efficiencies can be made in develop and test efforts with code re-use across our cellular and short-range device families being possible.
