Low power SiP with integrated LTE-M/NB-IoT modem and GPS

The nRF9160 is a compact, highly-integrated System-in-Package (SiP) that makes the latest low power LTE technology and advanced processing and security accessible, and easy to use, for a wide range of single device low power cellular IoT (cIoT) designs. 

Incorporating an Arm Cortex-M33 application processor solely for applications, a full LTE modem, RF Front End (RFFE) and power management system. The nRF9160 is the most compact, complete and energy-efficient cellular IoT solution on the market.

The integrated modem supports both LTE-M and NB-IoT and can operate globally removing any need for regional variants. All power saving features including eDRX and PSM are supported as is with IPv4/IPv6 support up to transport and security (TCP/TLS) level. The modem firmware is upgradable via secure, encrypted Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) updates.

The Arm Cortex-M33 application processor is supported by 1 MB of flash and 256 KB RAM making advanced application development possible in a single device solution. 

A GPS receiver is integrated into the radio offering various modes of operation to suit a wide selection of applications that employ location-tracking functionality

A broad selection of general interfaces and peripherals and are included on nRF9160 including 12-bit ADC, RTC, SPI, I²C, I²S, UARTE, PDM and PWM.

Security is best-in-class with Arm TrustZone technology for isolation and protection of normal and secure zones for firmware and elements of hardware including memory and peripherals. Arm TrustZone helps build solid and secure ioT applications that feature secure boot, trusted firmware updates and root of trust implementations without performance compromise.

Arm CryptoCell enhances security still further by offering cryptographic and security resources to help to protect your IoT applications from various attack threats. CryptoCell is designed for high performance cryptography solutions optimized for energy-constrained devices.

The nRF9160 supports both SIM and eSIM for connection and authentication with mobile network operators.

The nRF9160 hardware and development kits are now in production and is suitable for full end-to-end sensor to cloud development. We’re still developing features and optimizing performance.

LTE bands B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B8, B12, B13, B14, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28 and B66 have been certified so far. See this page for more details.

Before applying this version:

  • Note that this modem firmware is targeted nRF9160 SiP Revision 2 
  • It can be used for nRF9160 SiP Revision 1, but only for testing and development
  • It cannot be used for engineering samples of Revision 1 (e.g. DKs or Thingy:91 with version older than v0.9.0
  • After you upgrade to MFW 1.3.0 it is not recommended to downgrade to mfw 1.2.x or mfw 1.1.x.(potential file system issues)

Read out your revision by either AT command: AT%HWVERSION or look on the nRF9160 SIP for marking "B1".

"B1" = Revision 2

"B0" = Revision 1 

The AT command responses for Revision 1 and Revision 2 SiPs will be "nRF9160 SICA B0A" and "nRF9160 SICA B1A" respectively.

Early engineering Revision 2 (B1A) SiPs and Revision 1 (B0A) SiPs might produce AT command responses such as  "nRF9160 SICA BQA" and "nRFFFFFFFFF SICA FFFFFFFF" respectively.

Highlights:
  • A software workaround fix for flash memory controller hardware issue, which may have caused flash accesses to fail after sleep wake-up.
  • A software correction for handling FOTA rollback in case of security or watchdog reset. Issue may have caused unnecessary modem firmware rollback after FOTA.

1.1.1 nRF91 firmware binaries

The mfw_nrf9160 is the firmware for the modem subsystem of nRF9160. It supports 3GPP LTE
release 13 Cat-M1 and Cat-NB1 standards, and GPS L1C/A positioning.

Cat-M1 operation is enabled on E-UTRA Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25,
26, 28 and 66.

Cat-NB1 operation is enabled on E-UTRA Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25, 26,

SUPL client library v0.7.1
Changelog:

  • Added soft-float build of the library.
  • Fixed cell ID encoding in the sent request, so that the server can determine the location of the device and send a reference location back to the device. The MCC table is used as a fall back in case no reference location is received from the server.
  • Reference location is now only injected if it was requested.
  • Fixed usage of an IPv6 address as the device ID.
  • Removed the dependency to the modem library (modemlib). This version works with both modem and old bsdlib (sdk-nrfxlib/bsdlib) library.
