Nordic Semiconductor's nPM1300 Power Management IC shortlisted for Electronics Industry Awards

The multi-function nPM1300 PMIC recognized for uniquely integrating essential system management features necessary for power management in low-power embedded designs

Nordic Semiconductor’s nPM1300, the first-ever PMIC to integrate all the essential system management features necessary for low-power embedded designs, has been shortlisted for an Electronics Industry Awards in the “Power Product of the Year” category. Among other attributes, the nPM1300 was nominated for an award because it incorporates highly accurate fuel gauging, battery charging, and advanced system management in combination with two highly efficient buck regulators into one compact package, enabling exceptionally long run times for battery-operated applications.

“The PMIC market is dominated by products that don’t do much – forcing designers to use several chips to implement their power management system and still be lacking vital functionality. We saw an opportunity to integrate the most common building blocks and add functions that nobody had thought of putting on a PMIC until we introduced the nPM1300.” says Geir Kjosavik, Product Director – PMIC, Nordic Semiconductor.

The nPM1300’s unique system management features include an algorithm-based fuel gauge solution that monitors voltage, current, and temperature for higher accuracy than voltage-based fuel gauges. The algorithm-based fuel gauge does not need to stay powered while the rest of the system sleeps, hence nPM1300’s power consumption is considerably lower than e.g. coulomb counter-type fuel gauges. Nordic is the first and only company to integrate algorithm-based fuel gauging capabilities into a PMIC, providing both high accuracy and low power consumption at no extra cost to the designer.

Ultra low power compatibility

Developers using Nordic’s nRF52® and nRF53® Series, as well as the recently announced nRF54H20 and nRF54L15 wireless multiprotocol Systems-on-Chip (SoCs), will find the nPM1300 a perfect match for their power management needs. The PMIC is also suitable for battery charging and fuel gauging for applications based on the nRF91® Series Systems-in-Package (SiPs) low power cellular IoT solutions. In these applications the PMIC’s unregulated output powers the nRF91 Series SiP's internal buck regulators.

Celebrating excellence

The Electronics Industry Awards, hosted by Components in Engineering, one of the UK’s leading electronics publications, is now in its seventh year of “celebrating excellence and ingenuity across the electronics sector”. The organizers say the following about the Power Product category: “This award will reward the innovative power product for its outstanding technical performance, impact on the market and originality.”

The awards showcase innovative electronic design with a public vote determining an initial shortlist. Winners are then decided by an independent judging panel with the awards presented on October 24, 2024, at an awards ceremony held in London, U.K.
