What is Bluetooth HDT
Move more data in less time with Bluetooth LE. Bluetooth HDT will open up new use cases for products that transfer larger files or stream richer data.
Bluetooth® High Data Throughput (HDT) is the next step in Bluetooth LE technology. This new standard from the Bluetooth SIG delivers significantly higher data rates with low power consumption.
How it works: Bluetooth HDT adds new 2.4 GHz physical layers (PHYs) with more advanced modulation, and new protocols with longer packets than Bluetooth LE 1M and 2M. Bluetooth LE SoCs with additional support for Bluetooth HDT will use these features to transfer large amounts of data faster and spend less time on air.
Choosing the right technology
Bluetooth HDT, Bluetooth LE 1M and 2M, Wi-Fi
Bluetooth HDT extends Bluetooth LE toward Wi-Fi territory.
Bluetooth HDT suits products that need faster bulk data transfer or richer data streaming than Bluetooth LE 1M and 2M can offer. It is likely to fit best for data from a few MB to tens of MB, but is not limited to that range.
Bluetooth LE 1M and 2M remain the go-to choice for ultra-low-power applications that don’t need as much throughput. They use much shorter packets, with less overhead and lower latency. For these applications, the nRF54L Series is the right choice.
Wi-Fi brings much higher bandwidth and its own set of capabilities, and remains the choice for many use cases where low power consumption and design simplicity are not the main constraints.
Applications
For Bluetooth HDT
Faster data transferBluetooth HDT will move large data from a device to a phone much faster, such as richer exercise logs from smart watches and sports trackers, so stats are ready soon after the workout. Images, music and map files will transfer faster too. |
|
Faster firmware updatesFirmware updates are rare, but when they happen they should be quick and painless. Bluetooth HDT will shorten the wait, so devices such as wearables, smart home devices and connected health products are back in use sooner. |
|
Richer content on small displaysBluetooth HDT will let small displays on keyboards, gaming controllers and earbud cases show richer content, such as images and low-resolution video streamed from a PC or phone. |
|
Streaming for AI processingNot all video is meant to be watched by people. Bluetooth HDT will let a device stream compressed, low-resolution video to a phone for AI analysis. |
|
Yet to be discoveredEvery major Bluetooth feature opens up applications nobody has built yet. Bluetooth HDT will be no exception. |
