Introduction

Knowing how much energy is left in a battery is only part of delivering a reliable product. To truly optimize battery‑powered devices, it’s just as important to understand how the battery changes over time. Nordic’s fuel gauge and battery health solutions work together to provide accurate, real‑time insight into both remaining state of charge and long‑term battery state of health.

Rechargeable batteries – fuel gauge and battery health
Nordic’s algorithm based fuel gauge and battery health solution use real time voltage, current, and temperature data from the PMIC together with a battery model included in the SoC software to accurately estimate state of charge and state of health. The nPM PowerUP tool, together with an evaluation kit, enables an automated workflow for profiling and generating a battery model for the battery of choice in your application.

Primary-cell batteries – fuel gauge
Nordic’s algorithm based fuel gauge solution for primary-cell batteries use real time voltage and temperature data from the PMIC together with a battery model included in the SoC software to accurately estimate state of charge. The nPM PowerUP tool includes preconfigured generic battery models for the supported battery type.

The fuel gauge algorithm and battery model require only minimal flash memory and work just as well on 3rd part MCUs. There is no dedicated chip or licensing fees involved - just minimal flash memory usage and existing PMIC hardware costs.
