Nordic Thingy:91Cellular IoT prototyping platform

Multi-sensor cellular IoT prototyping platform
The Nordic Thingy:91 is an easy-to-use battery-operated prototyping platform for cellular IoT using LTE-M, NB-IoT and GPS. It is ideal for creating Proof-of-Concept (PoC), demos and initial prototypes in your cIoT development phase.

Thingy:91 is built around the nRF9160 SiP and is certified for a broad range of LTE bands globally, meaning the Nordic Thingy:91 can be used just about anywhere in the world. The cellular communication can be interleaved elegantly with GPS positioning acquisition making it perfect for sophisticated asset-tracking product ideas. The kit comes preloaded with a sophisticated asset tracking application.

The kit is packed with a multitude of sensors for motion, impact, air quality and much more. The nRF Connect SDK supports Thingy:91 and there are examples for all sensors and connectivity functionality.

There is an nRF52840 multiprotocol SoC on the Thingy:91. This offers the option of adding Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity to your project ideas.

The Nordic Thingy:91 comes complete with a global use SIM card from iBasis that has a free 10 MB data plan to get you up and running immediately. The Thingy:91 and SIM can be provisioned and monitored using nRF Connect for Cloud which is Nordic Semiconductor’s cloud demonstration, evaluation and test platform.

Unboxing step by step

  1. To ensure you get the latest available functionality it is recommended to update your Thingy:91’s firmware. To update please follow "Update Thingy:91 firmware" below, then continue with step 2.
  2. Open nRF Connect for Cloud, create a new user if necessary and login. Add a new device in nRF Connect for Cloud.
  3. Select "LTE device" to connect your Thingy:91
  4. Locate SIM ICCID and PUK on the iBasis SIM card found inside the Thingy:91 box
  5. Input SIM ICCID, PUK (found on the iBasis SIM card) and personal information.
  6. Insert SIM Card and power on Thingy:91. Then wait for yellow blinking on the LED.
  7. Locate IMEI and PIN on Nordic Thingy:91
  8. Associate Thingy:91 to your user account. Wait for blue blinking. Then your Thingy:91 is associated and connected! Optional: To active the GPS, go outside and press the SW3 button for min 10 sec until LED blinks purple. For more info, see the user guide below.

Update Thingy:91 firmware

Follow the steps below to update the nRF9160 SiP application firmware and modem firmware.

  1. Download the latest Thingy:91 precompiled firmware from here.
  2. The ZIP file inside the download is the modem firmware (mfwnrf9160xxx.zip), do not unzip. Follow this link to update it.
  3. The download has nRF9160 SiP application firmware for connecting to an LTE-M or NB-IoT network. Following these steps, update with the appropriate hex file (see CONTENTS.txt in the download for description).
  4. When complete, go back to step 2 in "Unboxing step by step" above.
