Nordic and Ingy partner to develop an IoT backbone network by creating a scalable decentralized mesh network between every luminaire in a building

Ingy has developed the firmware that runs on Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC for integration into third-party smart lighting luminaires

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Ingy, an Amsterdam, Netherlands-based lighting control solutions start-up, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 System-on-Chip (SoC) as the hardware solution to host its ‘Ingy’ proprietary smart lighting firmware. The firmware is preloaded on the nRF52832 SoC-based Fujitsu’s FWM7BLZ20, a module suitable for integration into third-party luminaires designed for commercial and industrial smart lighting installations.

The Ingy smart lighting solution employs proprietary firmware to deliver a high bandwidth, low latency, scalable mesh network comprising in excess of 10,000 nodes without the requirement for a gateway or Internet connection. Thanks to the processing power of Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC, the luminaries can be integrated with a range of sensors for daylight harvesting, occupancy detection, asset tracking, occupancy analytics, climate control, and indoor navigation applications. The SoC’s 64MHz 32-bit Arm® Cortex™ M4F processor is supports the Floating Point (FP) and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) computations typically demanded by high-end wireless mesh networking and IoT applications.

The solution is supplied with the option of an ‘Ingy gateway’, which exports performance data from the smart lights so that it can be visualized and reviewed by facility management via a wide range of existing facility and building management portals.

Nordic’s nRF52832 multiprotocol SoC combines the Arm processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (supporting Bluetooth 5, ANT™, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software), with 512kB Flash memory and 64kB RAM.

“We selected Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC because it is the de facto standard in lighting, making it easy to integrate for our lighting partners,” says Bastiaan de Groot, CEO, Ingy.

“Nordic has a long term commitment to the lighting sector and it is gratifying to see that commitment has been well received by the industry, with Nordic technology designed in to end products with respected partners such as Ingy,” says Alf Helge Omre, Business Development Manager for Lighting, Nordic Semiconductor.
