Nordic Semiconductor today announces that its award-winning nRF9160 is the first module to be certified for both LTE-M and NB-IoT. Certification has taken place for operation on the Deutsche Telekom network, one of the largest networks in Europe.
This will bring extensive cellular IoT (cIoT) connectivity to some of the most populated and industrialized regions of the world via the Deutsche Telekom network that spans Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, and much of Eastern Europe.
The nRF9160 SiP has been designed from the ground up to meet the complex challenges of both performance and energy efficiency within cIoT applications. Unlike other cIoT offerings, this has enabled it to be a true game changing device for markets such as asset-tracking, industrial sense and control, smart buildings and factories, right through to advanced wearables and medical applications.
The nRF9160 offers full LTE-M and NB-IoT operation plus assisted GPS positioning. This brings absolute flexibility to product makers wanting to address the needs of the burgeoning cIoT marketplace. It allows design-once, run anywhere peace-of-mind as it can operate on both of the dominant long-range cellular connectivity standards of LTE-M and NB-IoT. As such, the Nordic nRF9160 SiP offers unprecedented flexibility in situations where both these standards are present allowing for example the energy saving and huge range and penetration advantages of NB-IoT yet being able to perform rapid firmware updates (FOTA) via the higher throughput of LTE-M when necessary. Positioning and location are prime use-cases which are also serviced by the integrated GPS functionality designed into the nRF9160 SiP device. All LTE-M and NB-IoT power saving features, such as eDRX and PSM are supported by the nRF9160 SiP meaning products based on this device can viably offer battery operation of up to 10+ years.
From an application perspective, nRF9160 SiP features an Arm® Cortex®-M33 processor plus Arm TrustZone® security technology. The Arm processor and an associated 1MB of Flash memory and extensive peripheral set are dedicated to application use, with all communication activities handled in a separate on-chip system. This allows simplified and safer application development by allowing developers to focus only on their application without having to incorporate both application and communication demands into a single core.
The nRF9160 SiP is supported by a broad range of application development tools for desktop, mobile, and cloud with the nRF Connect suite of tools. Additionally, the Nordic nRF Connect SDK offers a wealth of application examples to help developers start building simple or complex applications dependent on their needs.
“Deutsche Telekom is pleased to certify Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9160 module and development kit,” said Wayne Gilbert, Head of IoT Integration and Validation at Deutsche Telekom. “Together with Nordic Semiconductor, we are committed to offer our customers world-class connectivity modules which are certified to offer optimal interoperability. Customers using the nRF9160 module are assured that their IoT devices will deliver excellent performance on Deutsche Telekom networks so that they can secure a successful business case.”
“We are delighted to make this announcement with Deutsche Telekom, a world-leading integrated telco service provider with networks spanning much of Europe and covering populations of around 200 million people and an untold number of devices to connect,” says Peder Rand, Product Manager, Cellular IoT Products, Nordic Semiconductor.
“The nRF9160 was designed from scratch to meet the exacting demands of the cIoT industry, it offers all the benefits of both the LTE-M and NB-IoT standards and true single device application design. As such, developers and engineers have recognized that, and we have seen an astonishing volume of development uptick since we launched. Certification by the world’s major telco networks is the last piece in the puzzle and that has progressed smoothly and quite rapidly. Adding Deutsche Telekom to this list is just fantastic.”
