Nordic Semiconductor’s world first dual Arm Cortex-M33 processor wireless SoC shortlisted for EE Awards Asia 2021

Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF5340 SoC recognized in RF/Wireless IC product category of prominent awards

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that its nRF5340™ high-end multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC), the world’s first SoC based on an Arm® Cortex-M33 dual-processor hardware architecture, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘RF/Wireless IC’ product category of the 2021 EE Awards Asia.

The EE Awards Asia celebrate the best products, companies, and individuals across the continent’s highly regarded electronics industry, with shortlisted nominees required to demonstrate the ability to both add value and improve all aspects of modern life through the application of technology. Organized by ASPENCORE, the world’s largest electronics industry media group, the winners will be determined by a judging panel comprising editors, senior industry analysts, as well as online readers and users across Asia.

The nRF5340 is the result of several years of product development from perhaps the most experienced low-power wireless R&D team in the world

Recognized as the world’s leading Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) semiconductor chip company (based on end-product certifications*) Nordic has evolved into a wireless IoT company able to ‘connect anything’ via ultra low power, short-range wireless technologies such as Bluetooth LE; or low-power, long-range wireless technologies such as the latest IoT-targeted version of cellular wireless technology, LTE-M and NB-IoT.

Dual-processor architecture

The nRF5340 SoC builds on Nordic’s proven and globally adopted nRF51 and nRF52 Series multiprotocol SoCs while introducing a new flexible, dual-processor hardware architecture with advanced security features ready for the most complex IoT applications. The nRF5340 combines dual Arm Cortex®-M33 processors; a high performance application processor capable of DSP and Floating Point (FP), offering voltage and frequency scaling options and running up to 128MHz (514 CoreMark) with dedicated 1MB Flash and 512KB RAM, and a fully programmable, ultra low power network processor running at 64MHz (244 CoreMark) with dedicated 256KB Flash and 64KB RAM. The nRF5340 SoC supports major RF protocols including Bluetooth 5.2/Bluetooth LE, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, and Zigbee. In addition, it has been designed to meet the requirements of LE Audio, enabling audio streaming over Bluetooth LE. For security, the nRF5340 incorporates Arm CryptoCell-312, Arm TrustZone® technology, and Secure Key Storage offering advanced root-of-trust and trusted execution security features.

Supports complex IoT designs

“The nRF5340 is the result of several years of product development from perhaps the most experienced low-power wireless R&D team in the world,” says Bjørn Åge “Bob” Brandal, Nordic Semiconductor, VP of Sales and Marketing, Asia Pacific. “The SoC is highly capable and ready to support a wide range of complex wireless IoT applications that were previously not possible, and we are delighted to see it nominated for such a prestigious award.”

The winners of the EE Awards Asia 2021 will be announced at a ceremony on Friday, September 10. Voting closes on Friday, July 9, and is available here.
