Browan Communications employs nRF52840 SoC in MerryIoT door and window sensors, air quality, motion and leak detection devices

Browan Communications has launched its latest line of ‘MerryIoT’ sensors with support for Amazon Sidewalk, a secure, free-to-connect community network designed to provide reliable connectivity for billions of devices. The multifunction smart home sensors integrate Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 Bluetooth® LE SoC and a Semtech SX1262 transceiver to extend the sensors’ working range at home and beyond the front door.

Hassle-free connectivity

“Amazon Sidewalk makes it possible to install our IoT sensors at the edge of a home network," says Mohammed Alhennawi, Sales Director at Browan Communications. “Our objective is to design wireless sensors that are safe, easy to set up, and use daily. We achieved this by incorporating the nRF52840 Bluetooth LE SoC from Nordic Semiconductor, which provides the most reliable maintenance-free connectivity.”

The MerryIoT smart home sensors provide air quality, motion, and water leak detection, as well as open doors and windows. In addition, each device integrates up to three additional sensors for temperature, humidity, tilt or tampering, as well as an 80 dB alarm.

Amazon Sidewalk support

Amazon Sidewalk operates on 2.4 GHz and sub-GHz spectrum allocations using Bluetooth LE and FSK/LoRa radio communication to support both home network and long range use case requirements. When needed, Amazon Sidewalk over Bluetooth LE can use the nRF52840 SoC to streamline connecting Bluetooth LE devices to the Cloud. For applications outside the home, Amazon Sidewalk uses the license-free sub-GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency band for longer range connectivity.

Amazon Sidewalk over longer ranges is a lower data rate, wireless IoT network that is designed to sit between home Wi-Fi and cellular IoT networks. It provides greater "all neighborhood" coverage than in-home Wi-Fi, but without incurring the cost of using a cellular network connection. In these applications the nRF52840 SoC can act as an application processor and provide Bluetooth LE connectivity for device interaction with a mobile device in order to authenticate it into a user network, or provide important over-the-air device (OTA) firmware updates.

To simplify the development of Amazon Sidewalk-enabled products, developers can use Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK, a scalable and unified software development kit for building products based on all the company’s nRF52, nRF53, nRF70 and nRF91 Series wireless devices.

"Nordic is involved in the wireless technology and standards that shape the largest ecosystems in the world,” says Finn Boetius, Product Marketing Engineer at Nordic Semiconductor. “By supporting Amazon Sidewalk, we deliver class-leading low-power, short-range wireless SoCs and software to our customers. I'm delighted that Nordic is part of Browan's first MerryIoT products to work with Amazon Sidewalk.”
