LEEDARSON’s A19 Tunable White Bulb uses Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC for wireless control over Matter protocol

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Xiamen, China-based Internet of Things (IoT) technology company, LEEDARSON, has selected Nordic’s nRF52840 Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) advanced multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide the core processing power and wireless connectivity for its ‘A19 Tunable White Bulb’.

The smart LED bulb is designed to replace a conventional bulb, enabling users to wirelessly control indoor lighting in a smart home or commercial building using any compatible connected device, or using voice control via a smart home ecosystem such as Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, or Google’s Assistant. A19 Tunable White Bulb comes in a 108 by 60mm form factor, is dimmable from 100 to 3 percent, tunable from warm white (2700K) to cool white (6500K), features static and dynamic scenes for different light experiences (for example, wake-up/sunset), and provides a lifespan of approximately 25,000 hours.

Secure Bluetooth LE commissioning

Using the Bluetooth LE connectivity provided by the Nordic SoC, a screwed-in A19 Tunable White Bulb can be securely commissioned from a Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone via a third party iOS or Android app. Once connected to the network, the smart LED bulb can be wirelessly controlled using Nordic SoC-enabled Thread – a wireless protocol designed for low-power, low-bandwidth network applications including mains-powered devices such as smart light bulbs.

LEEDARSON’s A19 Tunable White Bulb solution runs over Matter – an application protocol built on top of the mature Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP), as well as the mature Internet Protocol (IPv6) and other lower-layer protocols including Bluetooth LE and Thread. The Matter protocol is designed to enable interoperable communication between smart home devices, mobile app, and Cloud services. Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC can concurrently run an application, Thread stack (OpenThread), and Bluetooth LE stack (comprising a Zephyr Host and Nordic SoftDevice Controller) on its 64MHz, 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M4 processor with floating point unit (FPU).

The nRF52840 combines the Arm Cortex processor—which also powers the smart LED bulb’s dimming and tunable white control functionality—with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio supporting Bluetooth 5.2, ANT™, Thread, Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software, as well as a generous 1MB Flash and 256kB RAM memory allocation. The nRF52840 is Bluetooth 5-, Thread 1.1-, and Zigbee PRO (R22) and Green Power proxy specification-certified and its Dynamic Multiprotocol feature uniquely supports concurrent wireless connectivity of the protocols. The radio with on-chip PA provides features -100dBm RX sensitivity, a maximum output power of 8dBm, and a total link budget of 108dBm.

The nRF Connect SDK (Software Development Kit) is recommended for nRF52840 software development. The nRF Connect SDK integrates the Zephyr RTOS, supports applications using Bluetooth LE, Bluetooth mesh and Thread, and includes examples, Bluetooth LE profiles and driver support for all peripherals. The SDK also includes a migration of Nordic’s Bluetooth SoftDevice Controller from the company’s proven SoftDevices used with the nRF52 Series. The nRF5 SDK can also be used for development with Nordic’s S140 SoftDevice, a Bluetooth 5-certified software protocol stack for building long range and high data Bluetooth LE applications.

Powerful and reliable performance

“We selected Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC for our A19 Tunable White Bulb due to the chip’s powerful and reliable performance, as well as its support for the Matter protocol which enables seamless interoperability with third party devices, apps, and smart home ecosystems,” says Kellen Yang, Global VP of Sales & Marketing, LEEDARSON. “Nordic’s commitment to Matter also greatly supports our research and development.”
