About Nordic Semiconductor

PRE-APPROVED PRESS SUMMARY

Nordic Semiconductor ('Nordic') is a fabless semiconductor company specializing in ultra low power (ULP) and low power wireless communication in the license-free 2.4-GHz and sub 1-GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands, and commercial LTE telecommunications bands targeting the Internet of Things (IoT) and other wireless applications. Nordic is a Norwegian public company listed on the Oslo stock exchange (OSE: NOD).

Nordic's ULP and low power wireless solutions enable its customers to build wireless connectivity into everything from mainstream consumer PC peripherals, sports & fitness devices, toys and RF remote controls through to the most advanced and innovative 'game-changing' wireless devices such as beacons, health monitors, home automation, asset tracking and other IoT applications – while exceeding end users' expectations in terms of features, performance. security and price.

The company is the world’s leading vendor of Bluetooth® low energy Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) with close to a 40 percent share of new registered designs (2016). (Bluetooth low energy is a power-optimised, hallmark element of Bluetooth wireless technology introduced as part of Bluetooth 4.0 in 2010 and featuring a lightweight protocol “stack”.) The company offers the largest family of Bluetooth low energy SoCs ranging from the nRF52840™—an ARM® Cortex™ M4F processor-powered Bluetooth low energy SoC featuring a 2.4-GHz multiprotocol radio, 1 MB Flash and 256 kB RAM (the world’s first SoC to fully support Bluetooth 5, an extended range and higher throughput version of the technology)—to the low-cost version of the nRF51822™—an ARM Cortex M0 processor-powered Bluetooth low energy SoC with 2.4-GHz multiprotocol radio, 128 kB Flash and 16 kB RAM. All Nordic’s Bluetooth low energy solutions are fully compliant with versions of Bluetooth technology from Bluetooth 4.0 to the latest release.

The nRF52® and nRF51® Series are based on a common silicon architecture that supports Bluetooth low energy, ANT™ and 2.4-GHz proprietary RF protocol stacks (and IEEE 802.15.4-based protocols such as OpenThread in the case of the nRF52840) enabling an easy migration path for developers and companies. The SoCs feature a novel software architecture featuring a unique and powerful separation between protocol stack and user application code. The precompiled, thread-safe stack is not included in the developer’s application compilations - significantly easing application development, verification and testing. In addition, the Nordic SoCs’ large memory capacity allows for rapid and secure in-service over-the-air device (stack and application code) firmware updates (OTA-DFU) with full verification before the previous version of firmware is erased.

Nordic employs one of the world’s largest Bluetooth low energy RF protocol stack development teams which designs, test and verifies all the company’s “SoftDevices” (Nordic stacks) in house. SoftDevices such as the S132, a Bluetooth 5 compatible stack that supports Central, Peripheral, Broadcaster and Observer concurrent roles, supports up to eight connections, enable developers to design the most complex Bluetooth low energy applications.

In 2016 Nordic invested significant resources in a highly-talented and experienced group of cellular R&D engineers (formerly employed by the Finnish arms of Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Broadcom) and a facility in Finland to develop a family of products for low power LTE technology targeting cellular IoT. Low power cellular IoT suits applications such as smart utility metering, asset tracking, building security, healthcare and medical monitoring, indoor and outdoor GPS navigation, smart home technology and industrial automation. Nordic’s upcoming nRF91 Series low power cellular solutions are designed to provide long battery life, low cost deployment and maintenance, scalability for potentially billions of devices, a miniaturized form-factor and ubiquitous network coverage.

Nordic also manufactures the μBlue® Series of Bluetooth low energy connectivity ICs, the nRF24L Series of 2.4-GHz RF SoCs and the nRF24AP2™ Series of ANT connectivity ICs. The nRF24L Series (together with the Nordic Gazell™ protocol stack) are the market leading proprietary solutions for wireless PC peripherals. ANT is a proven technology for ULP wireless connectivity in sports & fitness equipment for products such as heart-rate belts, speed-distance foot pods, GPS pods, pedometers, activity sensors, bike cadence sensors, bike speed sensors, bike power sensors and weight scales. In addition, Nordic supplies the nRF2460™ audio streamer and Sub 1-GHz Series, an ideal solution for longer-range industrial, home automation and wireless monitoring applications.

The company’s products feature:

  • Class-leading battery lifetimes – Up to years running from regular AA, AAA or coin cell batteries;
  • Small size – Compact packaging options, enabling miniaturized wireless products to be developed, including ‘wearable’ devices and Internet of Things sensors;
  • Ease-of-use – Working 'out-of-the-box' without complex pairing procedures;
