The Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 SoC-powered ‘Aveine’ smart wine aerator and accompanying iOS and Android app ensures wine is served in its best possible condition

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Paris, France-based Aveine has selected Nordic’s award-winning nRF52832 Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its ‘Aveine’ wirelessly connected wine aerator, designed to ensure wine is precisely aerated, or allowed to ‘breathe’ for the appropriate length of time, to ensure it can be enjoyed in its best possible condition.

 

To begin, the aerator is placed on the neck of the wine bottle and paired to the user’s Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth LE wireless connectivity provided by the Nordic SoC. From the accompanying Aveine iOS or Android app the user scans the label of the wine bottle, and the ideal tasting conditions of the wine are determined via a proprietary algorithm, which then wirelessly adjusts the settings on the Aveine device on the wine bottle. The wine is then poured through the aerator, ensuring the precise level of aeration is achieved for the particular wine. The aerator can recreate the equivalent of anywhere between one minute and up to 24 hours of air exposure, instantly.

 

The Aveine wine aerator also provides a touchscreen display letting the user manually adjust the device to test wine at different levels of aeration. The ultra low power consumption of the Nordic nRF52832 SoC reserves battery life for the more power intensive elements of the device, namely the touchscreen and the aeration pump.

 

“The most important thing in the Aveine aerator is to improve the wine tasting experience, so the user should not be constantly worrying about the device’s battery,” says Nicolas Naigeon, Avenie CEO. “We couldn’t afford to use a high power consuming chip because we were already limited by the other power hungry components, so the nRF52832 SoC was a great low power solution to allow us to keep our battery life in the range we were aiming for.”

 

Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth LE SoC, a member of Nordic’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines an 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F processor ARM M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (supporting Bluetooth 5, ANT™, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) featuring -96dB RX sensitivity, with 512kB Flash memory and 64kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth LE solution.

 

The SoC is supplied with Nordic’s S132 SoftDevice, a Bluetooth 5-certifed RF software protocol stack for building advanced Bluetooth low energy applications. The S132 SoftDevice Central, Peripheral, Broadcaster and Observer Bluetooth low energy roles, supports up to twenty connections, and enables concurrent role operation.

 

“The very low power consumption of the nRF52832 SoC and its integrated Bluetooth 5 support were the most obvious features which helped us to select the Nordic chip,” continues Naigeon. “It provided us with an efficient and comfortable development environment, allowing us to focus on an intelligent design without having to worry about any hardware limitations.

 

“Also having a precompiled Bluetooth Low Energy stack was a great help as it allowed us to focus on the main logic, knowing Nordic’s proven SoftDevice will manage the connectivity side. Many features of the SoftDevice not only save time, but also allow us to take full advantage of the nRF52832 SoC’s features like secure connections and OTA updates.”

 

The Aveine connected aerator will be commercially available from Q1, 2018.
