Digital transformation specialist, Azzurro Digitale, has announced the ‘MATIX Box’, an IoT-based enterprise asset monitoring device designed for managing machinery and equipment across a broad range of industrial operations. The device is supervised by Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9151 module providing LTE-M, NB-IoT and DECT NR+ wireless connectivity to relay asset data to the cloud.
Installed directly on the equipment to be monitored, the MATIX Box incorporates a high-precision accelerometer that tracks cycles, cycle time, uptime and downtime. An alert system then detects and diagnoses issues before they become critical and sends the data directly to the cloud using the nRF9151 module’s secure cellular connectivity. For work environments lacking cellular coverage—such as shielded facilities or remote sites—the DECT NR+ capability of the Nordic module enables the device to alternatively relay data over a local private network across an entire facility with very few gateways, ensuring continuity of monitoring even where other cellular-dependent solutions would fail.
In addition to the nRF9151, MATIX Box also integrates Nordic’s nRF54L15 multiprotocol SoC to enable Bluetooth® LE beacon scanning for indoor location capability, as well as short range connectivity to satellite sensor nodes. By communicating with satellite sensor nodes (temperature, pressure, flow), users can perform more complete condition monitoring, and track assets even when they're at third-party suppliers with an indoor/outdoor geolocation module. From the ‘MATIX EAM’ cloud platform, industrial teams can then conduct asset performance management and work order management, plan and schedule preventative maintenance, and oversee the wider supply chain.
“The nRF9151 module’s cellular and DECT NR+ connectivity is what makes the device truly plug-and-play, as it does not require any local network infrastructure on the customer’s side,” says Marco Barbetta, CTO at Azzurro Digitale. “Equipment can be monitored wherever it is located, even at a subcontractor or external supplier. And because the device communicates only with the cloud without direct exposure to the Internet, it is much less vulnerable to attacks than solutions that rely on corporate Wi-Fi networks or the customer's IT infrastructure. Data is protected via SSL connection and encrypted, visible only to those with authorization.”
The MATIX Box is powered by a LiSOCl2 primary cell to maximize energy density and minimize self-discharge. The battery is paired with a lithium pulse capacitor to provide the current spikes needed by LTE radio. Alongside the low power characteristics of Nordic’s nRF9151 module, this enables the MATIX Box to operate for up to two years before battery replacement, eliminating charging or any electrical maintenance burden for the customer, and making installation genuinely plug-and-play with no wiring or dedicated power supply.
“Nordic’s technical information, reference designs, ease of use of the evaluation boards, and fast response from application engineers all supported our decision to use the nRF9151 and nRF54L15, and helped us bring the MATIX Box to market faster,” continues Barbetta. “Now we have a customer ready product that is proven to lower maintenance costs and downtime, and deliver up to 15 percent higher productivity with fewer production defects.”
