Samsung Electro-Mechanics Company SEM-MM Series module integrating nRF24Z1 transceiver and supporting passive components
Samsung Electro-Mechanics Company (SEMCO) SEM-MM Series module takes Nordic Semiconductor's nRF24Z1 stereo audio streaming transceiver and supporting discrete passive components and integrates them into a single device measuring just 10 by 10 by 1.7 mm.
SEMCO, a division of South Korean consumer electronics company Samsung, has designed the module to be a simple and low cost "drop-in solution" for consumer electronics designers. The SEM-MM Series module is a short distance wireless non-standard solution for high quality stereo audio streaming applications such as MP3 players or mobile phones to wireless headphones, and home theatre amplifiers to speakers. It allows developers of audio applications to easily adopt wireless audio functionality for their products.
The first version of the module is targeted at 5.1 surround sound home theatre applications. The module promises to free home theatre users from wires between amplifier and speakers without compromising audio quality.
The SEM-MM Series audio module features:
- A compact form factor measuring 10 by 10 by 1.7 mm; - Easy antenna matching; - Low power consumption; - Minimum passive "glue" components; - Versatile application from low-end audio applications to high-end mobile products.
The SEM-MM Series specifications are:
- Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) 0.01%; - Range 8 m; - TX and RX latency < 20 msec; - Maximum output power 0 dBm; - Average TX power consumption < 50 mW; - Average RX power consumption < 72 mW.
The only significant design requirement for the SEM-MM module is the antenna matching recommended for optimum performance. Although this process is relatively straightforward, SEMCO offers an antenna matching service to OEMs planning to integrate the module into their own products. The SEM-MM wireless audio module is now available for customer evaluation and SEMCO offers a reference design comprising TX and RX assemblies. For more information on SEMCO click here.
The nRF24Z1 single-chip 2.4 GHz, RF transceiver is a wireless CD-quality audio streaming device with 4 Mbit/s bandwidth to stream true "lossless" digital audio. It uses adaptive frequency hopping to avoid clashes with other devices operating in the 2.4 GHz band. Competing solutions such as lack the bandwidth to deliver high-quality audio and must resort to compression techniques, compromising sound quality. For more about Nordic's nRF24Z1 click here.
