ANT+ wireless sensors and products to be able to connect to smartphones

ANT: WIRELESS CELL PHONE CHIP COMPATIBLE WITH ANT+

With the Feb 15 announcement that the Texas Instruments multi-protocol WiLinkTM wireless single chip family now supports ANT+ (see www.tinyurl.com/ygpvr5s), handset manufacturers will now be able develop cell phones that are compatible with proven sport, fitness and health personal monitoring wireless sensors and products based on the interoperable ANT+ ultra low power protocol

Oslo, Norway - February 18, 2010 - Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announces that ANT Wireless, a division of Dynastream Innovations Inc. (ANT), and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced on Feb 15 that ANT+ ULP wireless sensors will now be able to connect to cell phones via the TI WiLinkTM series of multi-protocol chips (see tinyurl.com/ygpvr5s).

This includes both the newly announced TI WiLink 7.0 quad-radio WLAN/GPS/Bluetooth®/FM (see www.tinyurl.com/y9twxuk) and existing WiLink 6.0 WLAN/Bluetooth®/FM (see www.tinyurl.com/ycwvjy5) single chip solutions. In addition, it is said that existing devices based on WiLink solutions can enable ANT after a simple software upgrade.

"We are absolutely thrilled to learn of this development," comments Thomas Embla Bonnerud, Product Manager for Ultra Low Power Wireless at Nordic Semiconductor. "This is fantastic news for all ANT+ supporters like Nordic, and for all end users of ANT+ solutions, because it means that ANT+ products will now be able to connect to cell phones in the future.

"This could not only dramatically expand the potential market and application potential of interoperable ANT+ ULP wireless products, but also makes Nordic's market-leading ANT/ANT+ chips - such as the nRF24AP2 (see tinyurl.com/yjs4fcm) - even more compelling for both new and existing customers."

Nordic Semiconductor is a member of the ANT+ Alliance.

About ANT / ANT+  (www.thisisant.com)
ANT is a proven protocol and silicon solution for ultra-low power (ULP) practical wireless networking applications. ANT+ facilitates interoperability between ANT+ Alliance member devices and the collection, automatic transfer and tracking of sensor data.  Applicable in sport, wellness management and home health monitoring, ANT+ (built on the base ANT protocol) defines device profiles that specify data formats, channel parameters and network key. The ANT+ Alliance is an open special interest group of companies who have adopted the ANT+ promise of interoperability. The Alliance ensures standardized communications through optimized brand value and partnerships with other top tier products.

ANT/ANT+ offer a superior ultra low power wireless technology solution that is:

  • Mature, stable and proven with extensive infrastructure (development and manufacturing tools
  • Low cost solution (membership, development, certification, chips, etc)
  • Ultra low power solution (offering longer battery life than comparative protocols for the same data through put)
  • Capable of complex network topologies with multiple masters
  • Available now a leading multi protocol (WiFi/BT/FM/ANT) chip for use in cell phones and other mobile hub devices

The company behind ANT Wireless is Dynastream Innovations Inc. (www.dynastream.com). Dynastream was established in 1998 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Garmin International Inc. in December 2006. Dynastream is based in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, and is a world innovator in the research and development of inertial and wireless technology.
