Smart Bluetooth low energy LED table lamps offer adjustable brightness and color tunable lighting solution for hospitality industry
The PURillume LED lamp employs Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy SoC to allow synchronized control of multiple lamps
Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Cary, NC-based smart lighting start-up, PURillume, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® low energy System-on-Chip (SoC) for its Orchid LED table lamp, a wirelessly color-tunable LED lamp designed for the hospitality and residential sectors.
PURillume’s Orchid LED table lamps combine elegant design aesthetics with proprietary lighting technology, to deliver fully controllable omnidirectional light. This lighting solution can be easily adjusted by the user to personalize their light, either from the ‘master’ lamp, or from iOS or Android Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphones and tablets running the PURillume app.
Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC provides Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity between the master lamp and the PURillume app, as well as between the master lamp and one or more ‘satellite’ lamps, thanks to the Nordic SoC’s ability to act as both a Bluetooth low energy ‘Central’ or ‘Peripheral’ device. The wireless synchronization between lamps ensures there is never a mismatch in color temperature between lamps, providing the user with a consistent color in a room.
The energy-efficient LED light provides tunable color ‘temperature’ from a warm to cool white, and adjustable brightness output up to 3250 lumens (brighter than a 150W conventional bulb). Even at its maximum lumen output, the Orchid LED lamp uses less energy than one 60W incandescent bulb. It also features a sleep/sunset mode, an alarm/sunrise mode, and a nightlight mode.
Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) SoC, a member of Nordic’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (support for Bluetooth 5, ANT™ and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) featuring -96dB RX sensitivity, with 512kB Flash memory and 64kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth low energy solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.
“We considered other forms of wireless technology but chose Nordic Bluetooth low energy because of its performance and price,” says Neeraj Lal, President & CEO of PURillume. “In particular, we liked the ability to use the Bluetooth low energy connection to perform remote firmware updates.
“This is our first time working with Nordic and we have been extremely impressed with the support the company has provided. Nordic has been very responsive and helpful, and that has allowed us to complete the design of our final product.
The PURillume LED table lamp will be commercially available in Q2, 2017.
