Nordic Semiconductor today announces that bong, a Chinese smart wearables company, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® low energy (previously known as Bluetooth Smart) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its new sports bracelet, the bong 3 HR, designed to provide the user with feedback and guidance on improving exercise efficiency.

 

The bong 3 HR is a wrist-worn device that not only provides key exercise metrics in real time such as calories burned, distance covered, pace, and heart rate, but also offers baseline heart rate measurement, and a heart rate alert. Establishing baseline heart rate allows the user to calculate if their workout intensity is in the ‘fat burning’ heart rate range to achieve more efficient calorie expenditure, while the heart rate alert notifies the user through vibration if their heart rate is too high during exercise.

 

In addition to displaying real time exercise metrics, when wirelessly connected to a Bluetooth 4.0 (or later) smartphone, the bong 3 HR’s large display can also provide incoming call, SMS, and social media alerts. The device weighs around 16g.

 

The motion sensor data is automatically synched to a smartphone—via Nordic SoC-powered Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity—where the user can view their exercise statistics on the partner bong app. The bong app provides a professional data report on each day’s activities including exercise undertaken and sleep, as well as a heart rate report based on daily, weekly, and monthly intervals.

 

Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy SoC, a member of Nordic Semiconductor’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (fully compatible with Bluetooth 4.2, ANT™, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software) featuring -96 dB RX sensitivity, with 512 kB Flash memory and 64 kB RAM. When launched the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth low energy solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.

 

The nRF52832 SoC also supports up to 20 days of operation and Bluetooth low energy connectivity between recharges of the bong 3 HR’s 60mAh Li-ion battery. The nRF52832 SoC has been engineered to minimize power consumption with features such as the 2.4GHz radio’s modest 5.5mA peak RX/TX currents and a fully-automatic power management system that reduces power consumption by up to 80 percent compared with Nordic’s nRF51 Series SoCs. The result is a Bluetooth low energy solution which offers 90 CoreMark/mA, up to twice as power efficient as competing devices.

 

“Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC offers the best Bluetooth low energy performance, with a larger amount of memory storage space making it suitable for a next generation bracelet platform,” says Huang Hao, Partner, bong. “The SoC’s Floating Point performance helps to improve the accuracy of the dynamic heart rate reading and motion recognition functions, while its ultra low power consumption helps to achieve a longer standby time.
